I would bet anything that 95% of the people who read the financial newspaper EXPANSION have no idea what “cloud computing” means. The cloud computing to which the paper dedicated almost an entire page yesterday is not very well known by readers of financial news, but it means something very important. The cloud has extended to the boards of directors of our country.
Although the news story starts with the global agreement between Microsoft and Vodafone to support cloud computing, especially for SMEs, it also discusses the effort that both Google and Telefónica are making to play a major role in this environment.
With cloud computing, any company can have access to all kinds of applications which enables it to be competitive, as if it were any multinational. This is possible at a relatively low cost and allows the company to make a technological leap into the future.
Amazon already has a significant piece of this pie and it started earlier than anyone else in popularizing the use of its own cloud to provide services to any company. Now IBM’s original idea of providing on-demand computing is becoming reality and we are starting to see advanced applications at SMEs with a size which barely had computerized accounting before. Soon only those companies with advanced computing systems which help them manage their resources better will be able to be competitive. It is necessary to know how to control processes, visualize them to lower costs and improve customer involvement in our production cycles.
